Vadakkangulam Floods

Rains are rare in southern India after January till the end of May. They are rarer in Vadakkangulam, a village on the border of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. Drizzles are prevalent in early June when South West monsoon sets in Kerala and Kanyakumari districts, but rains come much later in October when Northeast monsoons set. A surprise cloud burst in early April (7th, 2007) brought copious rain and flooded the "Odai Theru" which serves as a conduit to the village pond. "Odai Theru" in Tamil means Canal Street. I have in 35 years have seen it only as a street and for the first time saw it as a canal -- 1 foot deep fast-flowing water with currents and eddies for over an hour. Many elders in the village remarked that they have not seen such phenomenal water in their lives in April. By avsuresh
